[Parents]

Albert survived the San Franciso earthquake of 1906. He was living in
the central city at the time.

He was a coal miner in France and continued with that occupation in this
country. It eventually led to his death from cancer. He was a teenager
when the family arrived in the states. His birth name was Camille Joseph
Dieu. His name in this country was, however, Albert Joseph Dieu, the
name actually given to his twin who died a few months after birth. It is
uncertain when he changed his name to Albert. His son, George, was given
the middle name of Camille but he never used it either.

He was an avid gardener. His green thumb grew enough fresh produce and
flowers to satisfy the needs of the family plus sell the surplus. He was
very successful at selling much of his produce during the growing
season.

Albert was the youngest of the 14 children. His twin brother died a few
months after birth.

Albert, like many in his family, enjoyed port wine and also beer. I
remember as a very small child being given a small portion of beer in a
"cheese" glass by him. We sat at the kitchen table in my childhood home
in Coos Bay. After his wife, my grandmother, died and his health began
to fail, he moved in with his son George and his wife Helen, my parents.
He stayed there until his painful death from cancer in 1950 just 2 weeks
after his sister, Gabrielle. All of the years in the coal mines proved
fatal for him as he developed lung cancer. He was too sick and weak to
be told that Gabrielle had died.

Albert is listed in "The Great Register of Voters" in:
1904--Murray Township--Corral Hollow Precinct, Alameda County (Tesla)
1906--Murray Township--Corral Hollow Precinct, Alameda County
(Tesla) as a miner
1908--Murray Township--Corral Hollow Precinct, Alameda County
(Tesla) as a miner

[Parents]

Augustine by every report was a most amazing woman. She was adored by
everyone who met her. She was a heavy set person who personified
goodness. She took great pride preparing feasts for the family.

Augustine was very close to her daughter-in-law, Helen. She taught Helen
many of her skills. Helen and George lived in the little house behind
her's. Helen and Augustine did many daily chores together. Augustine
took great delight in teaching Helen french. Helen would rehearse and
then be sent to a family member to repeat what she had learned. Often,
Helen was taught some inappropriate language or expressions that she
happily stated without fully understanding what was said. Some family
members were shocked or appalled at what was just said to them.
Augustine would roar with laughter.
