Was born in South San Franciso on Tuesday, February 25, 1908 at 7 P.M.
Also lived in central San Francisco as a child around Hyde/Eddy.Was married in 1931 at St. Monica's Catholic church in Coos Bay, Oregon.
He help to construct the church and was the first to be married in it.George learned the art of cooking from his mother. He had the incredible
ability to make some of the best soups seasoned with herbs grown just
outside the kitchen. He never followed a recipe but rather seasoned by
taste and experience.He was injured in World War II while at sea. The injury occurred by
accident but lead to a permanent disability which eventually contributed
to his death. He drove delivery truck for Coast Freight lines until he
and his wife purchased a small "mom and pop" grocery store in 1953 in
Coquille, Oregon. While driving truck he often took his favorite pet
scottie, "Candy", with him. He and his wife then operated the grocery
store, Dieu's Grocery at 526 N. Collier St, until his death in 1974.
His wife continued operating the store until she retired a few years
later.George's health continued to deteriorate until he finally ended with a
feeding tube surgically inserted into his stomach in July of 1973. His
wife fed him through the tube for the next 6 months until he died.Obituary:
George G. Dieu, 65, resident of Coquille since 1953, died here Wednesday,
February. 20. Born February 25, 1908 in South San Francisco, CA, Mr.
Dieu operated Dieu's Grocery Store since moving to Coquille.A World War II US Navy veteran, he was a member of Holy Name Catholic
Church and had been a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American
Legion.Surviving are his widow, Helen; sons, Edward of Los Angeles, Frank of
Corvallis, Geroge of Coquille, Ronald of Portland; sister, Celina Hill,
and sister-in-law, Mrs. Jesse Dieu, both of Coos Bay; seven
grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.Rosary will be recited Friday, February. 22, at 7PM in the Coquille
Chapel of Coos Mortuaries. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated
by Father Kenneth Steiner Saturday, February 23, at 10AM at Holy Name
Church. Mausoleum entombment and military honors will follow at Sunset
Memorial Park, Coos Bay.

Was the first to be married at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Coos Bay,
Oregon.Owned and operated Dieu's grocery in Coquille, Oregon for over 20 years
with her husband at 526 N. Collier. She retired in the late 1970's
after the death of her husband. She bought a home in Coquille, in the
White Cloud area, and lived there until she relocated to Portland in the
middle to late 80's. Her focus remained as it always had: family. She
adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Born in Tacoma, her family moved away when she was very young. Although
as a child, she lived in Salem, Redding, and San Francisco, most of the
time was spent in the Coos Bay-Coquille area. That too became what she
always considered home.Her mother-in-law took a mother role for Helen, teaching her too cook and
run a house. Their relationship became very close. Augustine, Grandma
Dieu, took great delight in teaching Helen french, although, much of it
was not appropriate for public conversation. It never matted to Helen
since her love was so strong.Helen was one of the most optimistic individuals ever. Although she was
often confronted with life's challenges, she never gave up nor lost her
spirit for life. Many medical ailments plagued her later in life, but
none blocked her. She loved to travel and did so as often as possible.
Even after losing a leg, she ventured to Hawaii, San Francisco, Reno,
Washington, and frequent trips back home in the Coos Bay/Coquille areas.Obituary:
Recitation of the rosary will be at 7PM Monday, December 16, 1996, in
Holy Name Catholic Church in Coquille for Helen Virginia Dieu, who died
Dec. 12 at age 81. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10AM Tuesday,
Dec. 17, in the church.Mrs. Dieu was born Aug. 12, 1915, in Tacoma. Her maiden name was
Anderson. She married George in 1931; he died in 1974. The couple owned
Dieu's Grocery in Coquille for 35 years. She lived in Portland for the
past eight years.Survivors include her sons, Frank of Corvallis, George Jr. of Coquille
and Ron of Portland; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and
close companions, Bob Shepherd and Ellen Greer, both of Portland.Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Coos Bay.
