An assortment of tools for the genealogist, including view/edit GEDCOM files, convert to DBase, create soundex list from GEDCOM, etc.This system is designed to use file formats at their most basic level: GEDCOM files (used to import and export records between genealogical databases), other text files (plain ASCII created with a text editor or word processor), and DBF files (created by and used by the Dbase(tm) family of software systems as well as several spreadsheet programs). For working with GEDCOM files, the following functions are available: Select and view a GEDCOM file, convert to DBF, edit data, edit tags, and list valid GEDCOM tags. Family Attic can also build, maintain and inquire from a surname/soundex database using GEDCOM files as input.

Provides the ability to display information from PAF data (via GEDCOM) including pictures which you may attach.Family Viewer is not a general purpose genealogy database program. Although it uses its own data structures, this data CANNOT be changed and can ONLY be entered by reading in a GEDCOM file generated by some other program such as PAF. For convenience, Family Viewer allows you to preview a GEDCOM file without having to convert and save the data. This would be useful if you want to see how large it is and what family names are included. the program will read the file displaying the number of individuals, families and family names. When finished, it will display a list box of all the family names. When names are entered, they are converted into 'metaphs' to be used for searching. A metaph is similar to a soundex code, but it uses only letters instead of letters and numbers. (See Metaphone algorithm, Lawrence Philips, Computer Language magazine, Dec 90) Photographs, maps, coats-of-arms, or any document that can be put into a graphics file using the 'PCX' format can be attached to a person, along with a comment, and displayed by this program.

Validates and repairs common errors in GEDCOM files.GED-Fix was created for people who shouldn't be editing their own corrupted GEDCOM files. GED-Fix makes four passes over the GEDCOM file, deleting syntax errors (garbage), grammar errors, and finding and correcting hanging pointers. If an individual is pointing to a FAM record which does not point back, it will when GED-Fix is done. If an individual points to a non-existent FAM record, GED-Fix will create the needed FAM record. The author says he got his experience to write this program while working as a contractor for the Family History Center at the LDS Church, where the GEDCOM file format was developed. His job was to write software that would test the integrity of GEDCOM files. He later developed GED-Fix to actually FIX bad GEDCOM files. This demo of GED-Fix will only work with very small GEDCOM files. The author states that this is intended to allow you to evaluate the program with the TEST.GED file that comes with GED-Fix. You must pay a registration fee in order to get a copy of GED-Fix that will verify and repair larger GEDCOM files.

Converts GEDCOM files to fixed format ASCII files.The GEDCOM to Fixed Format File Conversion Utility reads a file in the hierarchical structure defined in The GEDCOM Standard, and transfers selected data to one or more fixed format files. A "fixed format file" is a conventional file in which each record has the same format, defined by a fixed set of fields. Fixed format files can be used to import data into other applications (such as, database systems and spread sheets) or for direct processing (sorting, searching, displaying, etc.) The fixed format output files can contain fixed length fields, or delimited variable length fields. The utility can, also, produce simple reports listing data from the GEDCOM input file. The major features of the utility are: Conversion of data in GEDCOM format to conventional fixed format records, whose fields may contain tag values, tags, cross reference values, and pointers. The @ signs enclosing cross references and pointers are stripped. Basic data editing. Subfields can be parsed into separate fields, fields can be concatenated in any order, with or without user specified delimiters, and alpha numeric dates can be converted to numeric dates. For example, "John H. /Smith/" can be edited to "Smith, John H." and "7 MAR 1935" to "1935/07/17". Tag values from multiple occurring tags can be placed in a series of output fields or concatenated into a single variable length field. Multiple counts can be kept of tag occurrences in the GEDCOM input file and numbers of records output.Records can be selected for output based on counts or record content. Conditions can cause records to be either "included" or "excluded". Basic reports, listing data from selected tags, with pagination, page headings, and column headings, can be created.
